COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Course Description:
Welcome to Art & Literacy at ALMA! This course is designed to encourage students to express themselves visually and creatively through artistic thought and production while they build a foundation of knowledge and skills with a variety of media presentation, and written form.
Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes:
• Students will:
o Identify the Elements of Art and Principles of design.
o Apply understanding in order to create original work that conveys meaning.
o Examine and critique works of art throughout history and different cultures, including their own.
o Connect concepts discussed in class with real life experiences.
o Use digital media responsibly and ethically in order to effectively communicate and work collaboratively.
MATERIALS:
Required: All students must bring No. 2 pencils, sketchbook, colored pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, and markers to class every day.
Optional: Oil Pastels, watercolor set, glue sticks, magazines, newspaper, safety scissors, 12” rulers, chalk pastels, construction paper, brushes, and tempera paint.
Parents who wish to donate any of the above material to our class would not only be beneficial to the learning experience but will also be appreciated.
Coursework:
• Students will be expected to come to class prepared and to complete their “Do Now” assignments after being seated.
• Topics/Assignments: Elements of Art, Principles of Design, Color Theory, Watercolor, iMovie Presentation, Podcasting, Pointillism, Artist Criticism, Abstract Art, Tessellations, Perspective, Op Art, Quizzes, Midterm, and Final Exams.
• Exit Tickets will be completed before the end of class.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS:
To maintain a safe productive learning environment, art class guidelines have been established and reviewed in each class:
• Respect each other, the classroom and supplies; follow safety rules.
• Listen attentively while the teacher or other students are speaking.
• Be at your desk when the bell rings to begin class.
• Shirts must be tucked in at all times. No hoods on during class.
• Clean up and be seated before the dismissal bell rings. Teacher dismisses the class at all times.
• Food, gum and beverages are not allowed.
• Students must ask permission from the teacher for restroom breaks. There will be no restroom breaks during the first and last 30 minutes of class time.
• Cell phone use or texting are prohibited during class time.
• Do not touch or take anything from the teacher’s desk. Always ask if you need any materials.
• Claiming artwork other than your own is prohibited. Stealing or cheating of any kind will result disciplinary action.
No backpacks on desk or lap while working. All backpacks must be placed on your chair or on the floor.
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be given on a daily basis and students are expected to have homework completed by the beginning of each class period. It is essential that all homework is complete, as it will supplement topics discussed during class time and prepare you for assignments and activities upon your return to class.
ATTENDANCE:
It is crucial that you are in class everyday. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to refer to the class website (mrpriceart.weebly.com) for classwork, activities, and instructional videos you have missed. All classwork content will be available online. If you need further assistance you may leave a comment on the website, or see me upon your return to class. You may visit me during my office hours or before school to obtain any work you missed. Work turned in while you were absent will not be counted as late as long as it is turned in the day you return to school.
Tardiness will not be tolerated in Mr. Price’s classroom. Students that are tardy take away from the instructional time for others. Students that are continuously tardy will result in detention during nutrition/lunch and a phone call home.
GRADING POLICIES:
ALMA’s school-wide grading system is through standards based grading:
• Grading criteria (types of assignments and tests and their value in determining the student’s grade)
• Grading scale (percentage, 4 point rubric score, and letter grade)
• Mr. Price will print out class scores and post them every two weeks. Progress reports will be sent out every five weeks throughout the semester. If you have questions about your performance, do not hesitate to ask.
MAKEUP EXAMS/RETAKES:
Students with an excused absence will have an opportunity to make up their exam. Students who receive a (1) will have an opportunity to remediate and retake exams.
REWARDS/CONSEQUENCES:
A great attitude, exceptional work ethic, and respectful behavior during class time is highly encouraged.
➢ REWARDS:
o Students who exhibit appropriate behavior and meet classroom expectations will be rewarded in a variety of ways. Such rewards include verbal praise, positive phone calls, letters home, and opportunities to participate in Random Reward Raffles to win various prizes.
➢ CONSEQUENCES:
o Students who do not follow the appropriate guidelines for behavior and whom do not meet classroom expectations will incur the following consequences in sequential order:
1. Warning (Verbal or Name on the board)
2. Intervention
3. After class detention & parent call
4. After detention (following day) & parent call
5. Disciplinary referral to the office & parent call
TUTORING HOURS/COMMUNICATION
I will have 2 hours a week designated as time to help students with their course work. These hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45pm- 4:45pm, but are subject to change every semester. Parents are encouraged to communicate with me via email: [email protected]
